The Chapter held two conferences this past year.
Fall 2003 Conference at SUNY Institute of Technology in Utica, NY:
95 attendees enjoyed “2003: A (Library) Space Odyssey,” held in October at SUNY/IT in Utica. Library Director Dan Schabert gave the keynote address on the planning and construction of the Cayman Library at SUNY/IT. The panel discussion on wireless libraries with Jeff Liles (SUNY/Geneseo), Pam McLaughin (Syr. Univ.), and Ken Herrold ( Hamilton College) was very well-received as well. To top off the day, we held the Great Coffee Café Conundrum which was a debate between Chan McKenzie (RIT) and Jean Mahalov of St. Rose. The program committee initiated poster sessions for the first time.
Spring 2004 Conference at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs:
James Neal of Columbia University made the keynote address at “Controlling Chaos: Harnessing Digital Collections,” held on May 17, 2004. Prof. Deborah Lines Andersen spoke on the tenure and promotion process and how it is changing with electronic publishing. A panel representing large and small academic libraries and vendors (Nan Hyland, Cornell Univ.; Mike Poulin, Le Moyne College; and Sandy Hurd, Innovative Interfaces) discussed the ins and outs of federated searching. Nine poster sessions on all aspects of digital libraries and demonstrations of federated search products by vendors.rounded out the program.
The Janice Graham Newkirk Research Award of $500 was presented to Jane Kessler, Linda Loeser, Mary Van Ullen, University at Albany Libraries for their a comparative study of online and pc-based software programs that create bibliographies.
The ENY/ACRL Librarian of the Year Award was conferred on Jane Subramanian, SUNY Potsdam. She was presented with a plaque and an award of $250 at the spring conference in recognition of her dedication to ENY/ACRL, and her publications in the professional literature.
