Libraries Constructing Meaning: Ours Is Not a Neutral Space

Hope Olson, Associate Professor, School of Library & Information Studies, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

Libraries are places where meaning is constructed. We shape information by the context we give it in our collections, in our catalogues and in our interactions with users. Thinking about libraries in this way aids in understanding the implications of our systems and services for diverse perspectives and communities. This presentation will look at concepts such as mainstream and margins, diversity and difference, objectivity and inclusion, equality and equity through a theoretical lens (drawing on postcolonial critic Homi Bhabha) and relate them to professional and institutional practices and values.

Morning Break

The Electric Library: Implications for Accessing Alternative Press Periodicals

Deborah M. LaFond, Social Sciences Bibliographer, University at Albany
Mary Van Ullen, Bibliographer for Business, Economics, Geography, Urban Planning and Law, University of Albany
Dick Irving, Political Science, Public Administration, Public Policy, and Law Bibliographer, University of Albany

In an article entitled, Diversity in Collection Development: Comparing Access Strategies to Alternative Press Periodicals, the authors studied and compared methods of providing access to diverse points of view as represented by journals indexed in Alternative Press Index (API). To determine University at Albany patron access to non-mainstream periodicals, local print  subscriptions, expedited interlibrary loan through resource sharing consortia, and electronic full-text packages were compared to periodicals listed in API. Electronic full-text packages provide some added access to non-mainstream journals.  However, much greater access was found to be provided by participation in resource sharing networks. In this upcoming presentation, we will report briefly on the study and on our current research addressing implications of libraries' reliance on electronic resources for access to alternative press publications.

12:00 - 1:15

Lunch, Announcements, and Celebration of ENY/ACRL’s 25th Anniversary!

Recruiting for Diversity: How to Make it Work

Sandra Rios Balderrama, Director of the Office for Diversity at the American Library Association

Since we are recruiting for diversity we must be diverse in our approach.  Short term and long term strategies will be outlined as well as models from other library organizations. How we practice "diversity" as a living, working personal/ organizational value and how it facilitates or hinders our recruitment will be discussed. Questions and dialogue and learning from and with one another will be encouraged.

 2:15 - 2:30

Afternoon Break

 2:30 – 3:30

SESSION A

Delivering Library Services to Users With Special Needs

George L. Abbott, Head, Media Services Department, Syracuse University Library

An overview of adaptive technologies available for providing library services.  Can your students with special needs access your library catalog?  What do I need to know about my library web site?  How about closed-captioning for videos?   Have you overlooked the physical barriers to technology?  As we seek answers to these questions don’t forget to work with other units on your campus to share resources and ideas.

OR

SESSION B

A Whirlwind Look at Lesbian, Bisexual, Gay, and Transgender Issues in Academic Libraries

Brenda Marston, Curator, Human Sexuality Collection, and Women's Studies Selector, Cornell University Library

The past 20 years have seen a dramatic rise in academic attention to sexuality and sexual minorities. LBGT Studies classes are on every college campus (aren't they?) and university presses seek new work in this area. This session takes a look at LBGT issues in academic libraries from the perspective of the collections, the researchers, and the librarians.  How can we all participate in documenting lesbian, bisexual, gay, and transgender peoples and culture?  How can we help patrons find and use LBGT materials, and how can we serve LBGT patrons?  And what is it like being a "professional lesbian?” Come with your own questions and observations about this aspect of diversity in our libraries.
