9:15 - 9:30 Welcome Remarks
9:30 - 10:15 Keynote Speaker
A presentation of the organizational possibilities that the digital media will offer to libraries, and the resulting budget shift that these changes will allow. New models of scholarly communication will be explored.
10:15 - 10:30 Morning Break
10:30 - 12:00 Panel Discussion
Vendor representatives from EBSCO, JSTOR, and SilverPlatter Information, Inc. and librarians Steve Black (Serials Librarian, College of St. Rose), Maggie Horn (Systems Implementation Specialist, SUNY Office of Library and Information Services; former Head of Cataloging, University of Albany), and Pamela McLaughlin (Head of Electronic Resources and Document Delivery, Syracuse University) will comment on Paul Gherman's keynote address and offer observations on how the increase in electronic collections has affected their own work. Perspectives from vendors alongside public and technical services librarians will be given and exchanged on the panel. Questions will also be taken from the audience.
12:00 - 1:15 Lunch & Announcements
1:15 - 2:00
This presentation will focus on the selection and cataloging of e-resources and integrating them into cataloging workflows and online catalogs.
2:00 - 2:30 Afternoon Break & Poster Sessions.
This session will explain the evolution of the eBook industry, the major eBook providers, and the divergent models they use to provide unique access and content for their collections. It will address what this means for libraries: pros and cons, advantages and disadvantages, and how libraries may best utilize this new technology.
This session will describe how the Tri-University Group of Libraries (TUG) approached the problem of how to share and facilitate Web page maintenance of the rapidly growing collection of electronic journals (ejournals) purchased through consortial agreements. The institutions' individual Web pages listing electronic journals were combined into a single highly configurable Web interface.
Until recently, finding local journal holdings for periodical titles referenced in electronic periodical index databases required some pre-existing knowledge on the part of library patrons. Colgate University librarians addressed this problem by creating an HTML frame above the main index database search screen. Embedded links to online catalog searches added subsequently in databases such as OCLC Firstsearch have partially obviated the need for the Colgate-supplied frame; however, many databases remain which do not offer such links and can benefit from the method.
Dowling College Library was one of 28 early adopters of the Nylink - netLibrary shared collection of eBook titles. Issues faced included seamless catalog access to all library materials, whether and how to purchase MARC records, how to display and draw attention to the records on our integrated library system, and how to handle authority control. The poster session will weigh and discuss these ongoing issues.
While ILL staff know that an increasing amount of material is available through ASCII full text, it is often difficult to identify items that are available in this format. In addition, once the item has been identified as being available full text, ordering the material requires a separate workflow. The OCLC ILL Full Text Option overcomes those barriers. This session will address how the Full Text Option works and the costs involved.
SUNY Geneseo did not want to cut serial subscriptions without being sure that patrons would not lose out by switching to the electronic format. The project which compared their print serial subscriptions with electronically available serials considered currency, presence of full-text and/or full content (text and graphics). The result is a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet. This poster session will discuss what is in the spreadsheet, how it is being used, and how the vendors compare.
2:30 - 3:15
The program will discuss the design of a library gateway--a common entryway to a library's catalog, services, and networked information--based on the findings of a focus group study at Cornell University Library. The speakers will provide an overview of why and how the Cornell Library's Gateway system was created. They will also discuss the methodology and findings of a user study and how these findings have been used to justify and implement changes and improvements to the Gateway. Finally, they willreport on future plans to further integrate the Cornell Library Gateway and online catalog.
